I've been without the use of the Corrado now for about a month and a half; my new ride is the Big Green Limousine (the bus, for those of you who have never heard that)... The front suspension has been going, and one day it got REALLY loud-- I parked it at a friend's house and left it with the intention to just wait until I had enough money to take it in to EvS...

I sent it up last week Friday and got the call Monday with the estimate... $3300 Crying

I have nowhere to park it for the months it would take me to save up enough more money to get the repairs done (the house it was parked at is vacant, but it being foreclosed on in a week). Even if I get that fixed, there is a lot of other things that need work... work I can't do because even if I had the skills, I don't have anywhere to keep it while it's in pieces....

I can't do this any longer... I am giving up.

I've got one friend who is interested as long as he can afford the parts to do the work himself... I have a feeling he won't be able to afford it.

Parts for the suspension work it needs are $2489... that is through EvS; that includes a new distributor which it also happens to need right now. Don't know what can be found through eBay.

I want to keep it in the family, so to speak. I want it to go to someone who wants to restore it, not part it out.

Basics: 1992 VR6, flash red. 205k miles; 80k miles on what was a new transmission when it was replaced 80k miles ago. Passed emissions last year; is now old enough that it no longer has to. still gets upwards of 28 mpg freeway. Engine is strong.

I'm not going to post in the "for sale" forum until I hear back from my potential buyer, but any help finding a new owner would be greatly appreciated.

that price is for subframe, control arms, tie bar, sway bars, and distributor... as well I would assume as miscellaneous parts that go with basically rebuilding the front suspension

and also, that's through a dealer where prices are generally higher than one can find through eBay and other aftermarket parts vendors

my overall contingency plan is: I just got a bicycle-- a friend of a friend sells motor kits for bikes and has been building motored bicycles for four years. I will get around town mostly with that and the bus... Also, a friend of mine in Dallas has a pickup truck he is DYING to get rid of, and will give it to me if I go get it... so that involves flying to Dallas and driving it home.

I am going to try to do the smart thing and just focus on SAVING money... this might mean not getting something else until next spring, but if I am actually diligent and don't do anything stupid, I might be able to afford a low-miles 200Daydreamingsh Rabbit, which would give me something with some warranty

Financing is not an option... I have to have cash in hand. I inquired about financing a couple months ago, and with my poor credit score, interest rate was 25%

I think you're getting raked over the coals on that one. Why would you need a sub frame or control arm????? Unless you smacked it hard and bent them, they shouldn't need replacing at all. Bushings can be pressed into the control arms real easily. If you want a shop to do it, why not check Jon at prestige auto in Glendale. I bet you could get everything fixed for around $500.

FYI, I have a sub frame off of a 2.0L Golf III and a drivers side control arm. I'm not sure if they fit but I think they do. I'm not up on the differences with the + suspension on the VR stuff.

I'll check into that...

MAYBE I would sell anyway, but if the repair can be done that cheap, then my buyer is better able to afford everything...

I just can't keep up with this overall... ever since it hit 200k last year, it's been a cascade of problems, usually breaking down on my way to work which is making work not so happy with me.

If I hit the multi million dollar lottery, I would buy a daily driver and send the Corrado in for a complete rebuild.

I think of a possible scenarios for the cost:

1. They just over priced it so you don't want to do the work (they would choose not to do it either, but at that cost they'd be willing to do it)
2. Pricing that high so you would buy a new/used car from them.
3. Pricing that high so if you do buy something from them you're trade is worth nothing.
4. Pricing that high so if you do trade it in (for little or nothing) someone there can get it for cheep or nothing themselves.

Unfortunately, it's the other cost in having an older, higher mileage car. Sooner or later, you will have to pay up to get it back to or stay in running order. But if you're able to stay ahead of it, do preventive maintenance and stuff, it will be rewarding. It's just that sometimes getting over that hump is fairly steep. Especially if you can't do a lot of DIY or have other means of suitable transportation.

Never fun to hear when those numbers are that high. But you have to understand the dealership is always looking at factory replacement parts. They won't do aftermarket/used parts for the most part. I am sure that if you have the list, we can find/source parts for much cheaper.

i'll suggest that like UberG60 stated, talk to jon. he's a corrado fan. he's got a few around. might be able to help you out. screen name radojon on vortex. shoot a call out in the mke thread. they're more than willing to help in there. just use proper grammar. they've been kind of anal on that lately...

haha, that's OK, I tend to be anal about grammar as well Big gring

selling it to my friend Derrik would be "keeping it in the family", and I know I can trust him. He has been in love with my car since the day he met me. His brother has an early 70's El Camino and does most the work himself.

I WON'T sell it to EvS... I've already wondered if they've been up-charging on the repairs because they ARE trying to get me into something else, but I've told Angie that currently my choices are 1. fix the Corrado or 2. take the bus. I trust her to not screw me over, but it's also possible she's not been given a choice to NOT screw me over...

I am currently at a financial turning point where, if I stop NOW and focus on SAVE SAVE SAVE, I will come close to affording a 2008 Rabbit by spring. If I am going to buy something else, I would rather wait to have enough money to buy something REALLY worth buying than buying something right now just because it has wheels...

I've sent it to Prestige... I have to give it one more chance.

Maybe it will still be too expensive for me, but at least I will know.

Besides, I am getting REALLY tired of taking the bus.

OK, I talked to Prestige earlier today, and while they found more wrong with it than EvS did (rear brake work and something with the rear axle) their overall price was still just $2400...

SO, if I go for this, I don't have that kind of money on hand; it's going to take a month or so to come up with that... and I don't know how safe the car is to drive as it is... so I have to hope that they will let me leave it there until I have enough money... I am hoping that, with a deposit, they will be cool with that... Anyone know them well enough to know if they would be OK with that? It's not like they know me well enough for them to "owe" me any favors...

Spending $2,400 or more on a car that problem isn't worth much more than that probably isn't a great idea, even if it's a Corrado. That is, however, a pretty sizeable down payment on something that will probably last longer (and it's also like 3 million bus passes!)

My personal opinion would be to see if you can find enough willing VW nuts to help you aquire the parts and install them for less, or else sell it and move-on. Unfortunately, it sounds like some of the parts you need replaced aren't easily replaceable, like the control arms and the sub frame. As Tim suggested, I'm not sure why you'd need those parts unless they're badly rusted or bent from an accident. I'm guessing that you'd need someone with a lot of tools and a lot of know-how to replace just those two parts, and I'm not sure you'll be able to find that person for little or no money Sad

2.4K on a Corrado isn't un-heard of. I spent 3K on my new motor d'oh

Do you know what it NEEDS? I'm still surprised it's that much. A control arm is only like $60 w/ bushings. Sub frames are different. But I still don't know why you would need one I don't know

EDIT:
Did you tell Prestige that you wanted/needed a sub frame or did they confirm you do in fact need oneThinking I've never delt with them but I don't think they are the ones that would screw you over either.

Jon Campbell would be the guy to talk to for tools, a shop, and reasonable prices. Jon or Jim(ogsdub) for used parts, or even the Milwaukee thread. There's a lot of people with parts around that might work for you. Just reach out, they're willing to help out
