The 2010 season for Auto-X , also known as AutoCross, also known as SCCA Solo II.... is about to begin. In the past many Venom members have participated in Auto-X. If you have never done this before, it's a great way to discover one of the things your VW was designed for - Handling Quote:"What is Solo?"
Solo is the SCCA brand name for autocross competition. Solo events are driving skill contests that emphasize the driver's ability and the car's handling through a course designated by traffic cones on a low hazard location, such as a parking lot or inactive airstrip. While you're the only car on course and speeds are no greater than those normally encountered in legal highway driving, the combination of concentration and car feedback creates an adrenaline pumping experience. It's like being in a movie chase through a parking garage only you are holding on to the steering wheel instead of a box of popcorn! You are timed to the thousanth of a second and we add 2 seconds to your time for every cone you tip over or knock out of its box. Speeds are no faster than what you reach on the highway.
With that explanation.... watch the following video.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQE5JK_eV-8
Most events for Milwaukee are held at Miller Park... If you've ever parked in a remote lot at Miller park and wondered why there was so many skid marks on the parking lot... now you know why! If you have never autocrossed before you should try to attend the school. It will make your first several events go a lot smoother and you will enjoy those events much more! Another benefit of the driving school is that you typically get in a lot of runs, and it's a great way to see if this is something you like to do. You will also learn some things about driving and control of your car that will help you enjoy your VW more and make you a better driver. April 17th is the SCCA driving school. - The driving school has filled up in the past, so you may want to jump on getting registered right away if you intend on going this year. Milwaukee has 2 separate clubs that sponsor autocrosses. Below are the schedules and links to the 2 autocross club websites. I will load these schedules into the events forum soon. I'm not sure if I'm up for auto-xing this year but I might. Haven't done it in 7 years or so. To those that don't think they'd want to do it, you can always go to Miller Park and just spectate. Especially if you don't have all day to devote to auto-xing. If I have free time and remember that they're there, I usually go hang for a bit and see what's up. It's free so that helps too Oh. And the driver's school is April 17th SCCA Drivers School

I'd be up to going to one of these, even if it is just to spectate..

Even just spectating is fun. The Milwaukee SCCA chapter and WAI are pretty competitive. If you're just getting into autocrossing for the first time, I would recommend watching at least part of a day to see how it all works. Also, it's a little bit more of a drive, but Madison Sports Car Club is worth checking out. They're a little more laid back and I personally had way more fun autocrossing with them than with SCCA or WAI. The events are usually around the Madison area at various places, but their last autocross of the year is always at Miller Park in October. http://madisonsportscarclub.com/node/81

Hey that's my car. That is likely my favorite shot of my car dodging the cones. There was a WAI event today, but I did not attend. I do intend to do a handful of WAI event this year though. Steady work $$ pending.
